I always read Piper as not as smart as he thinks he is and kind of self involved. Which makes sense, you don’t dress up like he did and rob banks unless you’re under the impression you are hot shit no one can touch. He improved over the years, obviously. Which just makes me want flashbacks to when he was young and a total tool. You know he was, he probably bought lots of expensive boots and competed with Lisa to see who could be prettiest and no one else noticed. Not even Lisa.
Poor Hartley :( Well, he had a better hairdo than Lisa back in the Bronze Age, so there’s that…then the ’80s hit and she was leagues better.
Fun with timelines of the day: How old is he now anyway, 40? That would put the height of his supervillain career right around the time the Spice Girls were huge. Now try to work that into his look.
Attempting to pinpoint a character’s age leads only to madness and frustration. But yes, it was stated Heat Wave was 40 during Johns’ first run, so the classic Rogues are in that age range. Gods only know how old Johns and Kolins consider Cold to be, given the ancient way he’s drawn.
Here’s how long the Rogues have been around: when they debuted, they were probably supposed to have been born in the WWII period.
Though, in Johns’ origin story for Piper, Hartley mentions that he’s in his thirties. I always assumed he and James were a tad bit younger, putting them prolly between 37-39 or so. At the point of this comic, Fury had been in prison for 10 years, and since it was never stated whether or not Piper was with Fury or the Rogues first (I always figured he mashed up with the Rogues maybe a year or two after he hooked up with Fury) and he was at least in college (or college-age) when he left home, I’m guessing this is the closest you could put his age:
18-20 (Joined Fury) + 1-2 = 19-22 (Joined the Rogues) + 10 = 29-32 (Time Fury broke out of prison) + 2-3 = 31-35 (pre-Countdown) + 1-2 = 32-37 (Present)
It never actually states how many years have passed between him dating James, joining the Project, the events of Countdown, Rogues Revenge, and Blackest Night, however, I’m guessing he must’ve been with James for some time before breaking up, and he’d prolly been broken up for a while as he was comfortably in an apartment at the time he got the fake e-mail from his father. Also, I’m guessing his time with Agent Jesse, Countdown, RR, and BN probably stemmed over a year or so at least. Hopefully this helps. I really didn’t plan to get so into it. XD
No, no, get into it. I love all comic book timelines. Personally, I cast him around 40 so I can pretend he went to boarding school with Bruce Wayne. I think of them as two people who have a lot in common, which upon meeting would immediately decide the other is a huge self-involved asshole. And upon finding out about each other’s vigilante activities be confirmed in their beliefs.
